Morning activities with your baby/toddler during the hot summer months

Family-friendly nature walk in Platanakia forest near Thessaloniki

Morning Activities with Your Baby or Toddler During the Hot Summer Months in Thessaloniki & Halkidiki

Traveling with a baby or toddler during the hot summer months in Greece can be challenging. The relaxing beach days you may have enjoyed before having children often look very different once little ones are involved. Especially during the Greek summer, avoiding the hottest midday hours becomes essential when traveling with kids.

The good news? There are plenty of fun and family-friendly morning activities in Thessaloniki and Halkidiki that are perfect for babies, toddlers, and young children.

After living in Greece for ten years and spending five hot summers here with kids, we would love to share some of our favorite spots and easy summer activities for families 😊 From slow beach mornings to toddler-friendly sightseeing adventures, these are the places we keep returning to every summer.

Slow Summer Mornings with Kids

Beach Time Near Thessaloniki
Beach mornings are our absolute favorite during the summer months in Greece. Our beach essentials always include a large family blanket, beach toys, refreshing snacks, and plenty of cold drinks.

The beaches around Thessaloniki, such as Peraia, Agia Triada, and Neoi Epivates, usually start filling up around 11:00 in the morning. If you arrive earlier, you will easily find enough space to play, relax, and enjoy a peaceful morning by the sea with your baby or toddler.

Early mornings are also ideal because the temperatures are still comfortable for small children.

Paidiki Chara Peraias (Παιδική Χαρά Περαίας) – Playground with Shade in Peraia
One of our favorite playgrounds near Thessaloniki during the hot summer months is the playground in Peraia. What makes this spot so great for families is the amount of shade and open space.

There are two playground areas with swings for babies and older kids, climbing equipment, slides, and seesaws. The playground is located inside a park with shaded benches where parents can relax while the children play. There is also plenty of room for bicycles, roller skates, and ball games.

Next to the playground, you will find a bicycle park and a small kiosk selling ice coffee, cappuccinos, cold drinks, snacks, and ice cream.

Tip: Bring sunscreen and a cap, as not all play areas are fully shaded.

Platanakia – Family-Friendly Forest Spot in Panorama
Platanakia, located in the forest of Panorama near Thessaloniki, is another favorite summer destination for families with toddlers and young children.

Thanks to the many trees, this area stays cooler than the city and is perfect for a relaxed morning outdoors. There is a small playground, walking paths through the forest, and a café where you can enjoy refreshments.

If you arrive around 10:00 in the morning, parking is usually easy to find. There are also short walking routes suitable for families, and we definitely recommend bringing a baby carrier if you are visiting with a smaller child.

One of the highlights for kids is the small stream running through the forest. While the farm animals are no longer there after severe storms, you may still spot turtles if you are lucky.

Tip: Bring mosquito spray, sunscreen, and hats for the kids.

Trees Trees Playground in Pilea
Trees Trees in Pilea is another wonderful shaded playground near Thessaloniki for families with young children.

The playground offers plenty of space for kids to play while parents can relax on shaded benches nearby. One of the biggest advantages is the large sand play area with shared toys, so you do not need to bring your own beach toys.

There is also a canteen at the entrance serving coffee, refreshments, snacks, and light lunches. Families will also find children’s books available to read. Even if they are in Greek, the illustrations are fun for younger children to explore.

Sightseeing Morning Activities with Kids

Morning at the White Tower in Thessaloniki One of our favorite family activities in Thessaloniki is spending the morning around the White Tower area.

From around 10:00 in the morning, the popular 30-minute sightseeing cruises start operating along the Thessaloniki waterfront. This is a wonderful experience for babies and toddlers, especially because strollers can easily be brought onto the boat and stored at the front.

Our personal favorite is the pirate ship — always a big success with kids!

There is no entrance fee for the boat rides. Instead, you simply order a drink and enjoy the beautiful views of Thessaloniki from the sea.

After the cruise, you can continue the morning with ice cream, a visit to the playground behind the Alexander the Great statue, or a walk to the famous Umbrellas sculpture.

Visit the Petralona Cave with Kids
On the way to Halkidiki, you will find the beautiful Petralona Cave, one of the most interesting family-friendly sightseeing spots in northern Greece.

The cave became famous after one of the earliest human findings in Europe was discovered there. Guided tours last around 20 minutes, making them ideal for young children — long enough to be interesting, but short enough to keep toddlers engaged.

Strollers are not allowed inside the cave, but you can leave them outside and use a baby carrier for smaller children.

The cool cave temperatures also make this a perfect activity during extremely hot summer days in Greece.

Visit a Local Greek Market
One of the most authentic experiences in Greece is visiting a local market. For children, there is always something interesting to see: colorful fruits, fresh vegetables, herbs, olives, nuts, honey, feta cheese, flowers, clothes, and local products.

These markets are also a wonderful way to experience everyday Greek life during your holiday.

Here are some local markets near Thessaloniki and Halkidiki:

  • Peraia — Monday morning
  • Neoi Epivates — Friday morning
  • Nea Moudania — Wednesday morning
  • Kassandria — Tuesday morning
  • Nikiti — Friday morning

You will probably leave with delicious local treats — and maybe even a summer dress for mom or a new shirt for dad.

Final Thoughts
Traveling in Greece with a baby or toddler during the summer may require a slower rhythm, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. By planning outdoor activities during the cooler morning hours, families can still enjoy beaches, playgrounds, nature, sightseeing, and local culture without the stress of the extreme midday heat.

These are the places and activities our family truly enjoys every summer, and we hope they help make your family holiday in Thessaloniki and Halkidiki a little easier and even more memorable.
